Remote Desktop Connection Manager error 3334

by Shawn Meunier

Today I have finally fixed an issue that I have been having with Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Connection Manager (RDCman version 2.2 available here); Error 3334.

I have used RDCman for a couple years now and have only recently started having significant problems with it.  I do recall the occasional crash or other error but RDCman for the most part has be a very reliable tool.  Now I can rarely go an hour without encountering a connection error.  The issue seems to strike at random times.  And once it strikes, you have to close RDCman disconnecting all of your sessions and start over again.

It seems that the bulk of the problems started after I upgraded my workstation to Windows 8 and/or some of our servers to Server 2012.  I don’t believe it is the actual OS but more likely the change in the Remote Desktop Protocol version because I have seen the issue occur while working off a Windows 7 workstation.

I of course did some searching around the internet and found several others with the same error while using RDCman.  I found a few people having the same issue who claimed to have found a solution but none of the suggestions seemed to work for me.  In fact a couple seemed to make things worst.

After a whole lot of troubleshooting and research, I was able to find a solution that works well for me.  The fix is fairly simple to apply however it does require the use of a tool that comes with Visual Studio so you will need an install of that.  I used Visual Studio 2012 but older versions probably will work as well.  The steps are as follows:

  1. Open a VS2012 x64 Native Tools Command Prompt (Run as Administrator).
  2. Run the following command (update the end part with the correct path to your RDCman.exe):

    editbin /LARGEADDRESSAWARE "c:\Program Files (x86)\Remote Desktop Connection Manager\RDCMan.exe"

If all goes well, you should receive a success message.

Since the update was applied, i have had no issue for a couple of weeks now.  I am able to keep several (50+) sessions connected all day without issue.
